the losers shall inherit the earth

garbage tapes edition
50

The world is filled with losers who never
amount to much.
We all try to avoid this fate.
To escape mediocrity is a universal
theme.
No one wants to be forgotten,
but just about everyone is.
To think you’re special is an
automatic disposition.
How are you to rid yourself of the need
to be important?
How do you just enjoy being one of the many
faceless people who punctuate Earth’s
history?
How do you live a meaningless life
with a brain that can’t help but see itself
at the center of everything?
You just eat and breathe and shit
and fuck, one day after another.
Drink a cup of coffee. Taste how
good it is, and say ‘fuck you, brain’ —
for thinking there’s anything better than
this.
This place was made for losers like us.
Let’s not forget that we’re no better than
any of the shitheads who came before us.

Garbage Notes:

Mediocrity and the threat of insignificance is something we all deal with.

Some people want to be famous. Great. I’m sure there’s baggage that goes along with that. Not that I would know. But still, no one’s life is perfect. And even fame can be short-lived. Not all people who reach notoriety get remembered forever. Actually, check that—no one gets to be remembered forever.

Someday the world will end—humanity itself is kind of a temporary condition. And we have to come to terms with our own insignificance, whether it’s at the micro or the macro level—the personal or the universal level.

I think if you have people around you who love you and admire what you do, that’s a very good thing. I’m not sure a human being needs much more than that. Being accepted and being appreciated for the things you want to be known for—that’s enough to not consider yourself a loser.

Keep in mind, though, that loser is a subjective term. It’s just another label we apply to a person who doesn’t live up to expectations. In some way, we are all losers. We are all imperfect. And we’ve all failed at something.

We all know what it’s like to come up short and disappoint someone. But the only sure way to avoid being among the unhappiest of losers is to accept yourself and keep on trying to be yourself, regardless of what label the external world decides to stamp on you.

In the end, it’s only your brain that’s telling you you’re not good enough. It’s the subjective centrality of consciousness that makes it all so fucking difficult. We have to understand that our first-person perspective is a profound illusion. You are falling for the biggest trick of perception if you believe you exist at the exact center of reality.

Yes, you matter. But everyone else matters too. Everyone has a rich and vibrant internal life. Whether you reach the highest heights of fame. Or whether you die in obscurity. You must live your life. Because this is the only dance you’ll get on this great spinning rock.
