I feel better when it rains,
not because I hate the sun,
but because when it rains
the day seems less expectant —
more in step with my mind…
see, when it’s sunny, the sky calls to you
to seize the day, to do stuff, to make the most of the light
but I feel better in the dark—
I move more easily in shades of grey
I breathe better under a blanket of clouds
maybe it’s because everyone else seems to be down in the dumps…
rain has a way of letting me catch up to the rest of the world
when everyone else’s perspective is obscured by mist and fog,
my vision is crystal clear
Garbage Notes:
I don’t know what’s with all this talk of wanting it to be sunny out—wanting nice, bright, beautiful days… do we really always want sun-shining days? I love the rain. I have always loved the rain. April might be one of my favorite months.
There’s nothing nicer than falling asleep to the sound of rain falling on a roof. The pitter-patter—the beads and the streams, the rivulets running down a window pane.
Water brings life. Water cleanses. Sure, we have to see the grey. We have to walk through the fog. But, some of my favorite moments involve calm, meditative strolls outside when it’s drizzling—better yet, right after a big rainfall, when the earth smells all wet and alive, and everything has a hazy and dream-like feel to it.
Some might say, oh it’s a sign that you’re depressed or something if you like rain more than sunshine. That you must be some kind of brooding, moody fuck to prefer the rain. And maybe there’s something to it. This poem certainly alludes to the notion that when it rains there’s less pressure to do stuff. Everyone’s sitting around indoors, which is what the sad person sometimes prefers to do.
Or maybe it lets us dour poets catch up a little with the rest of the world.
I think I just like the stillness, the great human pause that happens when we wait for the sky to do its work—the world seems to slow down when there’s a good rain.
What about you? Do you love the rain? Do April showers bring you joy? Does it bring ideas to your brain?

I would highlight several of your statements if I could. Great piece.
I know that feeling of relief when I wake up to a rainy day. I loose it though when the rain lasts for 30 plus days. The joys of living in Vancouver.
Rains for sure, but also the after shower sun
When the world will re-accelerate, I will find my pace to watch the rainbow :)
