entropic universe
...
whenever I feel all locked-in by order
or suffocated by too much structure,
I just have to remember
that the laws of physics are on my side,
how entropy is the rule,
and that chaos reigns supreme…
all organized systems inevitably deteriorate,
all great things eventually go the way
of the Roman Empire, sooner or later…
things go to ruin, life falls apart
this is an entropic universe
even if you live in a society
that is in love with ticking boxes,
know that the ink on the page will fade
and all you’ll be left with is open space…
sure, matter self-organizes
but only because it likes to disperse energy
we build sandcastles, only to wash them away
men construct bombs, only to blow things up…
but wild nature still wins the day!
order only exists to promote disarray
even life itself can be viewed as an
instrument for the dispersal of energy,
continually replicating itself in order
to consume or destroy
anything that stands in its way…
that’s what you’re here to do,
to get all inspired and fired up,
to come up with ideas and plans,
to put them into action, so you can,
as they say, move fast and break things,
to blaze trails and break molds,
not to sit still and grow mold…
though, even that is entropy at work…
so go! ride that wave of creation!
and don’t be afraid!
smash those fucking castles to the ground
“Order is entirely in our ideas! In matter there is no trace of it!” Céline, Death on the Installment Plan
Garbage Notes:
I think it’s easy for creative people to feel stifled by too much structure. I tend to be a pretty disorganized person. I’m not a fan of to-do lists or calendars or micromanaging every detail of my existence. I don’t like using templates or outlines. I like to freestyle most of what I do.
My bedroom, my closet, my fridge, the backseat of my car, my desktop and my literal desk—almost always looks like a tornado hit it. And to be honest, I tend to prefer certain things to be in a state of organic disarray.
It allows for an inherent spontaneity and aliveness to the way my life unfolds. I get to be pleasantly surprised when things magically fall into place. And, honestly, if you could see my thought process, that’s where you will find the real harmony.
When it comes to my idea, what projects I want to work on, the sources of my inspiration, the logic of my stories and poems, the way I articulate my thoughts and my feelings to other people—that’s where you’ll find the true order.
So, let’s face it, sometimes you need things to be a little crazy outside yourself, so you can find nirvana within yourself…
The sad thing is, we live in a world that values order and conformity as a means to control chaos and limit individual freedoms. But all we have to do is look outside our little bubbles. Look at nature. And you’ll realize that entropy is built into the laws of the universe.
There’s going to be disorder and randomness and uncertainty to any system. So why limit yourself with unnecessary controls? You can’t predict everything. Why cut yourself off from the possibilities of true creativity by adhering to some arbitrary rule structure that’s been laid out before you to serve the needs of someone else’s mind?
Be free, be wild, and have fun—especially when it comes to your passions, your love, and your creativity.

Interesting thoughts, though I'm kind of the opposite. As a very orderly person (lists, spreadsheets, outlines) maybe that's why I enjoy the release of writing and getting out in nature so much.
I really love this poem because it's positive, encouraging us to be who we are: freely creative.
